Even if you’re not a ‘90s baby or a boy band fan, there is no denying that Backstreet Boys’ “I Want It That Way” is one of the most iconic songs in pop music history. That’s exactly why the tune topped Billboard’s 100 Greatest Boy Band Songs of All-Time list, as well as what made UK singer Conor Maynard and Italian producer duo SDJM want to team up to cover it.
“When ‘I Want It That Way’ came out it was kind of groundbreaking for us, in terms of the melody, mood and vocals – they were all amazing, it just worked,” SDJM tells Billboard. “So we wanted to bring a more conventional, up-to-date style to the record and make people dance as well as sing along.”
The guys initially released an upbeat, EDM-inspired rendition of the BSB classic, which they titled “That Way,” in January. And just in time for the finale of Billboard’s Boy Band Week, Maynard and SDJM unveil a stripped-down rendition today (April 27) along with a performance video.
The black-and-white clip sees Maynard at the mic while SDJM do their mixing business in the background. While they may not be rocking any BSB memorabilia, all three of the guys feel the same way about “I Want It That Way” as any pop music lover.
“The song is so nostalgic for so many people,” Maynard — a ‘90s baby himself — says. “Feel some of that Backstreet Boy love!”
