Cody Simpson is finally following up his 2015 Free LP with a new approach to music, along with an all-new band called The Tide.
The singer’s introduction sets the scene for the return of his musical inspiration. “A grand visitation of creative inspiration arose when I spent my summer in Venice Beach,” Simpson explains according to Vents magazine. “Practicing guitar, surfing and writing poetry and songs in the streets of vibrant Southern California, I was met with an intense surge of musical and literary energy.”
Simpson continues, equating his new musical venture to the ocean tide and to a form of enlightenment he reached while spending time on the beach. “I conceived of a concept, a project, a band. The Tide. The Tide, acting as a sonic exemplar of flow and fluidity. The way of things. The way of nature. Guitars, rock and surf music, psychedelia, transcendence from everyday bourgeois consciousness. A project that could encourage fellow youth to strive for the state of flow I experienced that summer. A fluidity that the ocean’s tide exemplifies so flawlessly. The way of the tide. The sun and the moon. Zen spontaneity.”
The Tide makes total sense for Cody Simpson’s new musical direction, as he was named the United Nations Development Program’s first ever ocean ambassador. Simpson will showcase his newfound Zen spontaneity in a short series of live shows in SoCal this October.
