Masters of indie pop CHVRCHES have returned with another new single, “Never Say Die,” which was released Thursday (March 29). The track points towards a more downtempo direction for the Glasgow, Scotland trio, whose third studio album, Love Is Dead, is set to drop this May.
Although a slower tempo, “Never Say Die” features robust, linear-patterned synths that maintain the song’s energy. The simple lyrics reveal frontwoman Lauren Mayberry’s dismay, despite the optimistic song title — “Weren’t we gonna be honest and weren’t we gonna be more?” she pleads, as “didn’t you say that?” is repeated throughout. Listeners can sense Mayberry’s pain and disappointment in this high-drama tune.
