In August 2016, R&B/pop singer Charlotte Day Wilson released her debut EP, CDW. She has contributed ethereal vocals to BADBADNOTGOOD‘s “In Your Eyes” and toured on select dates with Local Natives, singing Nina Persson’s part on “Dark Days.”
Now, the Toronto-based singer is readying the release of her second EP, Stone Woman, which she will self-release on Feb. 23. Below, Wilson is sharing the title track’s music video exclusively with Billboard.
The video opens with Wilson’s silhouette centered on screen, illuminated by a warm golden light. It isn’t until the first chorus when the light expands, and red and orange flares spotlight her facial features, all while inviting the listener in even more. By the end, Wilson seems to break out of the stone woman exterior and offers a goofy expressions and a slight smile — a subtle nod to the notion there are two sides to every story. A reminder, and encouragement, to look a little deeper.
“I wanted to make an intimate and honest portrait of my friend Charlotte, drawing inspiration from David Bowie‘s ‘Heroes,’ Sinead O’Connor‘s ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ and Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests,” says the director Devon Little, who also shot the EP’s cover art. “I have found that the most impactful videos are the most simple ones — so we tried to keep things very minimal. We shot this video in about five hours with an intimate crew of four-five people in Toronto.”
Wilson adds: “”The idea for this video was to create something timeless and honest — an image of strength, beauty and vulnerability. It was the kind of process where we just had to shoot and hope for the best, and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.”
