As Charlie Puth gears up for another record year with the forthcoming release of his sophomore album, Voicenotes, the 26-year-old dropped by Ellen to perform his latest single “How Long” Thursday (Jan. 11). The sleek, funky bassline opened up the performance, as Puth — backed by a four piece band — slipped into the high notes of the infectious chorus.
Puth’s Ellen performance comes just one week after the crooner hit Twitter to share some good and bad news. Along with sharing the exciting new Boyz II Men-assisted track “If You Leave Me Now,” Puth revealed that he had to push the release date of Voicenotes back.
“I have to push the album release date. I’m producing this album all myself and with that comes a lot of work, and in my opinion, the album is not perfect yet. However, it will still come out this year, and soon,” he said before following up with, “I’m putting out a song I did with Boyz II Men tomorrow. And it’s probably one of my favorite songs I’ve ever written. Love you guys and thank you for understanding.”

But to make it up to all of you, here’s the good news. I’m putting out a song I did with Boys II Men tomorrow. And it’s probably one of my favorite songs I’ve ever written. Love you guys and thank you for understanding.

Despite his delayed album release, the “Attention” singer already has plans to head out on the road with his new material. Puth unveiled dates for The Voicenotes Tour (with special guest Hailee Steinfield) on Dec. 18. Puth will head out for the road on July 11, beginning in Toronto and will play shows throughout the summer until Sept. 1 where he will conclude in West Palm Beach, Florida.
“How Long” has enjoyed extensive pop success in 2017, currently sitting at No. 27 on the Billboard Hot 100 (chart dated Jan. 13). The second single from Voicenotes follows the wildly popular lead single, “Attention,” which earned Puth his first solo top 10 on the chart as it peaked at No. 5 in August.
