Caroline Kole blends her country upbringing and pop flair to her infectious new song “Missing Each Other.” Penned with Stephen Schmuldt and Jilian Linklater, “Missing Each Other” showcases Kole’s airy vocals alongside seductive electronic beats and thumping rhythms.
The Nashville-based singer-songwriter says the raw and reflective “Missing Each Other” is an introduction to her vulnerable forthcoming EP Freaking Out! due for release in September. Fueled with emotion and anxiety, the Florida native found a safe space with her co-writers to pen the confessional track that brings to mind pop mainstays Julia Michaels and Halsey.
“’Missing Each Other’ is the soundtrack to a relationship playing the ‘opposite’ game,” Kole tells Billboard. “One person moves right when the other goes left, one person says this when and other hears that… and maybe it’s cool for a while, but eventually you have to ask yourself if it’s sustainable. Stephen Schmuldt and Jilian Linklater let me be incredibly honest with them. And I want to be better about being incredibly honest with everyone.”
While Kole’s pop and EDM influences are heard throughout “Missing Each Other” she actually got her big break thanks to the attention of a major country artist: Reba McEntire. The country legend heard Kole perform at the famed Bluebird Café in Nashville, which led to a management deal with Starstruck Entertainment and a publishing deal with Sony/ATV Music Publishing at the age of 14.
“My relationship with Reba has been a defining one for me personally and for my career. She has held my hand since I was 10 years old, all while letting me forge my own path,” Kole, 22, says. “I could never have even created a more supportive and loving mentor if I dreamed a thousand dreams. She allowed a little girl with a guitar to open up her incredible shows and be a part of her inner circle. Grateful is an understatement.”
