Amid carrying and birthing twins, Beyoncé hasn’t released any of her own music in 2017. But as the Bey-hive knows very well, even becoming a mother of three hasn’t stopped Queen B from jumping on some of the year’s hottest tracks.
First there was “Shining,” on DJ Khaled‘s Grateful alongside husband Jay-Z. Sonically, this was probably the easiest collaboration to see coming. Khaled dropped the track as a surprise immediately after the Feb. 12 Grammy Awards, paralleling Beyoncé’s best urban contemporary album win with her new lyrics, “All of this winnin’, I been losin’ my mind.”
Then, there was J Balvin and Willy William‘s “Mi Gente,” which featured Beyoncé on a remix, all because her daughter Blue Ivy loved the song. The singer was added late in the song’s life because, “We wanted it to live for a while and get as big as it could on a global scale in Spanish,” explained Rebeca Leon, who co-manages Balvin with Balvin’s label, Universal Music Latin Entertainment (UMLE). The song definitely had a massive impact prior to Beyoncé, becoming the first all-Spanish language song to hit No. 1 on Spotify’s Global Top 50 chart.
“Walk on Water” with Eminem came as a bit of a surprise. The rapper teased the song in a not-so-traditional manner, creating a hoax infomercial for those who suffer from AR, claiming they’d be able to, “Walk On Water with Revival.” Beyoncé offers an angelic hook to the track, singing, “I walk on water/ But I ain’t no Jesus.”
Thursday (Nov. 30) saw the release of Beyoncé’s duet with Ed Sheeran, a reworking of ÷ track “Perfect.” Fans all over the Internet have referred to it as a perfect wedding song, as its the mushy love song 2017 truly deserved.
