In Billboard‘s series, “How It Went Down,” artists tell the stories of how their hit songs came together, while their tale comes to life around them in animation. In our newest episode, Bella Thorne and Prince Fox explain how their chance encounter eventually led to the creation of their new song “Just Call.”
It all started with a red jacket. “I was wearing a red jacket and she said she liked the red jacket,” says Fox. The next day, while scrolling through Snapchat, Fox realized that the girl who admired his colorful outerwear was Bella Thorne.
Fox then approached Thorne with a song that he thought suited her and then went into the studio, where Throne says Fox’s vocals were a necessary addition. “After getting to know you and hearing your words behind this story, we have to make it a duet,” Thorne explains of her pitch to Fox.
According to the pair, the “craziest” part of the recording was how most of the vocals weren’t recorded in an actual studio. Fox’s were recorded in a Guitar Center in Boston during a thunderstorm, while Thorne’s were recorded in the bathroom of a karaoke bar in Canada. “I was feeling real lonely, sad vibes,” she says.
