On Thursday (March 7), pop singer/songwriter Ava Max released her latest single “So Am I.” The 25-year-old artist from Virginia, who now calls Los Angeles home, had early success with her breakout track “Sweet But Psycho,” which just went top 10 on Billboard‘s Pop Songs airplay chart this week.
The new song is a bouncy, pop-heavy anthem that shows off her melodies and storytelling. An accompanying video was released simultaneously, where Max is seen walking through a high school hallway and dancing in the cafeteria.
The chorus sends a strong message about navigating your adolescent years, with lyrics like “Do you ever feel like a misfit?/ Everything inside of you is dark and twisted/ Oh, but it’s OK to be different/ ‘Cause baby so am I.”
Max says her new song “is about loving yourself, being different, being an outcast and not fitting in the format that society wants to put us in.”
