Welcome back to Takeover Tuesday, where each week, Billboard taps chart-topping artists and tastemakers to compile their very own playlist exclusive to Billboard‘s Spotify account. We give the artists free rein to base the list on whatever subject they choose. The only rule? Make it as creative and unique to them as possible.
Austin Mahone has dropped some hook-heavy pop jams this year. Beginning with the stirring banger “Why Don’t We” in February, the 23-year-old released the flirtacious “Anxious” in April and most recently put out the funky “Dancing With Nobody” last month.
Whether Mahone’s new songs are making you dance, sing or simply smile, what’s most important to the pop singer is that his music is making his Mahomies feel something. So for his Takeover Tuesday playlist, Austin shared the latest tunes that are making him feel something.
Kicking off with Mahone’s latest single “Dancing With Nobody” — which he confidently says “is sure to get you moving” — Mahone’s 17-song playlist also features songs from Future, Khalid, Bazzi and The 1975. He made sure to shout out Taylor Swift, not only because “You Need to Calm Down” is a “smash hit,” but also because she was a big part of Mahone’s road to stardom. “I’m forever loyal to her for taking me on tour at the beginning of my career,” he adds.
Mahone also says he admires Tyler, The Creator and the progress he’s made from the beginning of his career to the music he’s making now. He picked Tyler’s Igor cut “Earfquake” for his playlist, in part because “Playboi Carti’s verse is legendary.” Another artist Mahone has been digging is Lil Nas X, but not for his reigning Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 “Old Town Road.” Instead, Mahone digs “Panini” and the message within the song — and more importantly, that Lil Nas X “was able to prove to everyone that he isn’t just a one- hit wonder.”
Bad Bunny and Tainy‘s collaboration “Callaita” is one of the songs Mahone feels most on his playlist, particularly because he doesn’t speak Spanish. “I don’t understand the words, but I understand the feeling,” Mahone says. “Ever since I moved to Miami I find myself liking Reggaeton more and more.”
Among other tracks like NAV‘s Meek Mill team-up “Tap” and No Rome’s “Pink,” Mahone gives a nod to his two favorite artists, Drake and Chris Brown. Along with Drake’s recent Rick Ross collab “Money In The Grave” and Chris Brown’s Gunna-featuring release “Heat,” Mahone closes out his playlist with the tune the pair released together last month, “No Guidance.” “My two favorite artists on a song together both killing it?” Mahone says, “Automatic banger!”
And of course, Mahone’s feeling-centric playlist wouldn’t be complete without his other two 2019 releases, as well as his good friend Kiiara, whose video for “Open My Mouth” features Mahone himself. Shameless plugs aside, there’s no denying that all of Mahone’s picks will get you feeling some type of way.
