Legendary Cuban trumpeter Arturo Sandoval just announced a new duets album, Ultimate Duets, featuring some of today’s pop and jazz A-listers, including Stevie Wonder, Celia Cruz, ABBA’s Anni-Frid Lyngstad and many more. And most endearingly, he’s got a song not only that talks himself up, but is named after him — with the help of Pharrell Williams and Ariana Grande.
Over a smooth-as-silk Cuban-flavored beat, “Arturo Sandoval” is a calling card we all wish we could have, with lines like “His melodies wash up on your mind just like seashells/ To remember that we’re all golden as well.” And with an untouchable multi-decade career that’s found Sandoval as sideman to Dizzy Gillespie, Michel Legrand, Dave Krusin and more, one can’t begrudge the trumpeter this victory lap with modern pop stars.
