Ariana Grande made her BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge debut today (Sept. 5). The program, which typically has singers perform original songs and a required cover, featured Grande closing out the program by performing Sweetener tracks “No Tears Left to Cry”, “R.E.M.”, and “God Is a Woman”, in addition to an unexpected cover of Thundercat‘s “Them Changes” from 2017’s Drunk.
Before launching into the cover, Grande called the song “my favorite song of the past year and a half” and praised Thundercat for being a “super-brilliant artist.” Grande soars and managed to jazz up the already funky track, decorating her vocals with a series of riffs and runs sprinkled throughout to create a soulful and personalized rendition of the song.
Grande will continue to perform on BBC as the singer is set to record a one-hour special on the associated television network this coming Friday (Sept. 7).
The full live lounge is currently available for streaming through BBC, starting at the 2 hour and 23 minute mark. Check out the cover of “Them Changes” on its own below.
