A Sweet Social Media Start
“Pete Davidson” begins with the lyrics, “I thought you into my life, whoa/Look at my mind, yeah,” in reference to the caption of an Instagram Grande posted back in May.
A Match Made in Heaven
The next lines, “Universe must have my back/Fell from the sky into my lap,” continue the theme set forth in “God Is a Woman,” when Grande sings, “And he see the universe when I’m in company.” The song makes it clear that Ariana and Pete feel a greater power is holding down their relationship, and the universe is fulfilling their destiny to be together.
Ari’s Moving On From Mac
“My whole life got me ready for you, ooh, ooh/Got me happy, happy/I’ma be happy, happy, yeah/I’ma be happy, happy/Won’t get no crying from me, yeah,” is a possible reference to starting a new relationship after breaking off what was described as a toxic relationship with her ex, Mac Miller. The lyrics also play off of the words in Sweetener’s lead single “No Tears Left To Cry.”
Inspiration Strikes After One Week
Finally, on Thursday night’s episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the “God Is a Woman” singer revealed that she wrote the sweet ballad just a week after she and Davidson started hanging out; the couple then famously became engaged in June after only a few weeks of dating.
“We met on SNL two, three years ago,” she explained. “We never exchanged numbers or anything, we weren’t even friends for a long time. But I had the biggest crush in the whole world on him the whole time.”
She never told Davidson at the time, but “I left his writer’s room… [and] I’m not a crushy person, I don’t have crushes on people I don’t know. But I jokingly said to my tour manager, ‘I’m marrying him. 100 percent,'” Grande added.
