Anna of the North reflects on a better time in her new song and video for “Used To Be,” which dropped on Wednesday (April 10). “Now you’re spending all your money on the things you don’t need / When all that really makes you happy are the things you can’t see,” the “Lovers” artist sings on the track. “Our shit shouldn’t be this hard, you know that love is for free / So come and spend a little time on me / Remember how we used to be.”
Featuring Anna’s distinct, breathy vocals and eclectic synthesizers, the song strikes a nostalgic mood, longing for a world without the complexities of social media and obsession about the future. The video shows Anna of the North (born Anna Lotterud), at a dog salon as she bathes and grooms the pups, encouraging listeners to take in life’s simple pleasures and live in the moment.
“‘Used To Be’ is a reminder back to when we were young and didn’t worry about superficial things that often take too much of our attention these days,” Lotterud says in a press release. “I’m afraid that one day I’ll wake up old and sad realizing I spent my entire life staring into a screen wanting to have or be someone I’m not. Let’s just go and throw a ball at the wall together and appreciate each other for a second.”
While Anna of the North originally started out as a duo featuring producer Brady Daniell-Smith, the singer is now flying solo and working with a variety of producers.
“Used To Be” is the second track released from Lotterud’s upcoming album, slated for release in the fall. The album will follow the success of the pop star’s debut, Lovers, which brought Anna of the North to new heights following its widespread popularity and the title song’s placement in the hit 2018 Netflix teen romance To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before.
