UPDATE: America’s Got Talent released the following statement to Billboard about Rogers’ death: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Dr. Brandon Rogers, who graced the America’s Got Talent stage as a contestant. Our thoughts are with his family.”
A promising singer who was tapped to compete on America’s Got Talent this summer after producers heard his smooth cover of Boyz II Men‘s classic ballad “On Bended Knee” has died in a traffic accident. According to TMZ, 29-year-old Brandon Rogers was involved in a car crash in Maryland on Saturday (June 10) and died the following day in the hospital.
The site reported that Rogers was discovered by AGT producers who saw his cover version of the 1994 Boyz II Men classic on Instagram, a killer version that even earned props from the group. While a spokesperson for the show could not be reached for comment at press time, a source reportedly told TMZ that no decision has been made yet on whether the Rogers segment will air in an upcoming episode slated for next month; Rogers’ family reportedly said they would like the performance to air.
The original clip has now turned into a memorial, with dozens of fans expressing their grief and condolences to Rogers’ family.
After asking fans if they thought Rogers should join the group onstage, Boyz II Men hosted him at one of their shows at the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas in January.
The band also posted a heartfelt message on Sunday (June 11) when they heard the news of Rogers’ passing. “Today our hearts are deeply saddened to learn about the sudden death of Dr. Brandon Rogers in a car accident,” the trio wrote on Facebook. “A few moths [sic] back we brought this young man out to the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas to perform with us. He was great all 3 nights! Just a genuinely nice person and a really good singer! Gone too young and gone too soon. It hurts to know that the world will never have a chance to witness what his impact on the world could have been as a Doctor and even on the music world. A great spirit and a great voice. Even for the little time we knew you you will be sorely miss. May God Bless, keep and comfort your family in this difficult time.”
His sister, Christina, also released a statement. “Words cannot express the hurt and sadness that come with losing my brother,” she wrote on Instagram. “They cannot express the joy and gratitude i feel for having gotten to know and love him. But the can express happiness for knowing that he touched many lives and inspired many.”
