Brooke tells Billboard that when she was first kicking off her solo career, she had an A&R meeting where she was played a bunch of potential songs. “All of a sudden, I hear this new song,” she recalls, noting that she fell in love with it and was instantly hooked on the beat. She then turned to the A&R and stated that she “needed” that to be her record.
Weeks and months passed before Brooke finally went to the studio to record “Lips Don’t Lie.” When the day finally arrived, she showed up to the studio only to be told by the A&R that they didn’t have the files and had to postpone recording.
After a few more weeks passed, they got the files and Brooke was able to finally record the song on what ended up being the day before Halloween — resulting in the session taking place in a studio filled with skeleton and spider-web decorations.
Joined by producer Oscar Görres, who flew in from Sweden to record the track, the singer says that they had a lot of fun in the studio together. “I just put my whole flow and spin and flavor and personality into this record,” she confesses. “I really zoned in to give this record my flavor and my character.”
As for how she decided to recruit A Boogie for the song, Brooke remembers scrolling through Spotify when she came across his music. After making a few calls, they got him to jump on the track. “He was able to still incorporate some melodies, but also his own flow and rhythm and his own cadence,” says Brooke.
