Alessia Cara stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last night (June 18) to perform the TV debut her new song “Growing Pains.” Cara sounded as flawless as always as she crooned the R&B-tinged track, which is the lead single from her untitled sophomore album, which is scheduled to be out later this year.
Cara also sat down for an interview with host Jimmy Fallon, touching on her journey as an artist, thank you speeches, and her experiences on the road with Coldplay, including a hilarious story involving a giant teddy bear.
“My crew and I, I don’t where we found it, we got this giant stuffed bear. Not a bear costume, a toy bear. Somehow we opened it and took all the stuffing out of it and thought it’d be fun to like get inside and scare people,” she said, explaining that on the last day of tour, she wanted to play a prank on her tour mates. “I left a little note saying, ‘I wanted to thank you guys for having me on tour and I left you this bear.’ Planned it all, got fake balloons, all of it. And I was in there for what felt like three hours. It was 30 minutes, actually. I had to be limp and I couldn’t see anything.”
The Canadian singer-songwriter also briefly opened up about how her new track’s title was inspired by her brother and how it was fitting to debut the song on The Tonight Show as a part of the next phase in her career, because that was where she got her start in 2015.
