Welcome back to Takeover Tuesday, where each week, Billboard taps chart-topping artists and tastemakers to compile their very own playlist exclusive to Billboard‘s Spotify account. We give the artists free rein to base the list on whatever subject they choose. The only rule? Make it as creative and unique to them as possible.
After being discovered by Sia on Twitter back in 2013, AJR stormed onto the scene with their debut single, “I’m Ready.” In the five years since, the New York-born trio — consisting of brothers Adam, Jack and Ryan Met — have carved their own path with an eclectic mix of electro-pop tunes on two EPs and two albums, most recently unveiling the deluxe version of their LP The Click, on Sept. 21.
In support of The Click, AJR will be kicking off The Click Tour (Part 2) on Oct. 26 in Dallas. The 14-date North American tour will see AJR playing New Orleans’ Voodoo Music + Arts Festival on Oct. 28, with stops in Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas and Atlanta before a hometown show at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom on Dec. 21.
Ahead of the tour, AJR has shared the songs that reflect the wacky vibe of their upcoming tour for this week’s Takeover Tuesday Playlist. Just like their live show, which always keeps AJR’s fans on the edge of expectation and surprise, the songs on the playlist are unsuspecting and switch from genre to genre with each track.
“Unexpected transitions, remixes of songs, weird performance pieces, and production elements all contribute to a show that is non traditional, slightly left of center,” the brothers say of their shows. “This playlist aims to do the same thing. You might think you understand the theme and order, but then a song starts that will surprise you.”
The 13-song playlist contains an eclectic mix of tracks that feature Vampire Weekend, The Beach Boys, Panic! At the Disco, Rex Orange County and more.
