All Adam Lambert needed was a shimmery blue curtain and subtle piano accompaniment to blow the doors off of Stage 56 on Tuesday night’s (Nov. 19) Late Late Show. The Queen singer and solo star wowed the studio audience with a powerful run through his Velvet: Side A ballad “Closer to You,” scaling the song’s heights with pop operatic virtuosity.
Standing in a circle of light, Lambert deployed his signature falsetto on the emotional lines, “And I would sink my house down underwater, ooh-ooh/ I would trade all my gold for dirt/ Let me tell you right now/ I would walk through fire just to hold ya/ Whatever gets me closer to you.”
Before his performance, Lambert slipped back into his reality singing persona for a mock episode of The Masked Singer, with Late Late host James Corden and Frozen 2 star Josh Gad acting as the clueless judges. Wearing a sparkly cape and towering feather headdress Lambert belted Queen’s “Somebody to Love,” with Gad guessing Lakers star LeBron James. “LeBron James is like seven feet tall… I’m not!” Lambert responded, also brushing away their guess of Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage and comedian Kevin Hart.
He tried one more song, Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now,” which fully explained why Corden and Gad did not make the cut as judges on the show’s first season. “I’m not Jack Nicholson guys, he’s 82 years old!” Lambert said angrily, swatting away other stupid guesses from Oprah Winfrey to Jeff Bezos, Kanye West and Elvis.
