Call it serendipity. Zoë Kravitz, star of Hulu’s modern makeover of Nick Hornby’s music-saturated High Fidelity, is back in the studio working on songs of her own.
“I’ve been messing around a little bit,” she tells Billboard. “I’ve been working with my friend Jack Antonoff in the studio. It’s hard to get things consistently going, but when we have time we spend a few days here and there. My dream is to release an album by the end of the year.”
In 2014, Kravitz’s electropop duo LolaWolf released its debut album, Calm Down, followed by an EP in 2015 and a single, “Baby I’m Dyin,'” in 2017. Since then, she was featured on the Janelle Monae song “Screwed” from 2018’s Dirty Computer and landed a rap on “Anti-Social Smokers Club” off Rae Sremmurd’s 2018 album SR3MM.
Of working with Antonoff, she says, “He’s a wonderful person and really great working with female artists. There’s something really selfless about the way he works. He wants to assist artists in what they are feeling, what they have to say, what they’re hearing in their head. That’s a beautiful thing for a producer.”
Did immersing in High Fidelity reignite Kravitz’s musical passion? “I mean probably, subconsciously. It’s not like the show made music a huge part of my life. Music is a huge part of my life and has always been and will always be,” she says. “But I’m sure subconsciously on some level, you’re talking about music all day and in that space, I’m sure on some level it did.”
As for her personal tastes, Kravitz says of late she’s been listening to a lot of artists from the ’60s — with one major exception.
“The only person new who’s blowing my mind is Billie Eilish. I’m totally fucking obsessed with Billie Eilish right now as a person, as a singer, as a musician,” she says. “It actually feels really good to be into something that is in popular culture. She’s phenomenal, a breath of fresh air and she feels like a real artist. To see her and watch her evolve, I’m just really excited by her.”
