Illenium makes dreamy future bass. Zeds Dead makes anything, as long as its hard. The duo and the dreamer have come together in the studio, and the result is a moving feast of highs and lows, and a defiant roar against life in a box.
“Where the Wild Things Are” dares the listener to paint any way but by the numbers. The tune starts with a low hum and builds strong with a wall of crunching electric guitar and bass drum. Before you know it, you’re howling into the night, there’s a hint of drum’n’bass rhythm, and then the big bad dubstep monster bares his teeth.
There’s plenty of both production styles on display. You can hear Illenium’s softness glistening over and between the gritty bits, and damn are those bits gnarly. The second drop is even nastier than the first, as it should be.
“Pretty surreal to be releasing a song with Zeds Dead tomorrow,” Illenium tweeted. “These guys have always been a huge inspiration of mine.”
It’s a nice even blend that proves you can have your bass spicy and sweet at the same damn time. The collaborative tune is out now on Zeds Dead’s label Deadbeats. Listen to “Where The Wild Things Are” below.
