A striking piano intro slowly opens the door toward a sonic landscape rich with exotic textures. Yes, this tune has bass, but it’s delivered in a subtle, evolutionary way that speaks to a strong sense of musicality and directive. Honestly, if this is what Zeds Dead and Ganja White Night are capable of together, they should have combined forces years ago.
“Samurai” is one of the most beautiful and alluring electronic dance tracks we’ve heard in a while, and it certainly sets a strong tone for both Zeds Dead and Ganja White Night in 2018.
“These guys have been on top of the bass world for years now and hold some of the truest classics of the genre,” Ganja White Night says in a joint statement. “We supported [Zeds Dead’s] Zach and Dylan on their Deadbeats performance in Seattle. Following their performance, we got a text from Dylan asking if we wanted to go B2B at an after party. We all got comfortable behind the decks together and the rest is history. Musically, we feel really good about how this song came together. We wanted to do something different, something that would surprise. We focused on creating an extended dramatic introduction and Zach and Dylan came in with their iconic drops. Once we had the pieces in place, we spent time going back and forth blending everything together and finding little pieces we could improve on. This was a real pleasure for us.”
“We had the pleasure of playing a few shows with the GWN guys last year, and quickly felt that we shared a vibe,” Zeds Dead adds. “I think we both are interested in incorporating different emotions into bass music and figuring out how to create a journey through more than one energy and feeling. Dubstep is such a versatile genre, you can explore so many different sounds and influences while staying within a general framework. This is our spin on a classic concept.”
Luckily, this is a peek into GWN’s forthcoming LP, The Origins, due February 5.
“This album in a way goes back to the roots of our sounds,” GWN says. “Melodic builds, wobble sounds. We feel we’re currently in a place now that we can explore our sound deeper and the GWN following will take chances with us. Second, visually this is the prequel to our character Mr. Wobble which was built around our last album ‘Mr. Wobble.’ We’ve always wanted to create music with a powerful meaning, The Origins is a continuation in that journey”
There are more collaborations on The Origins yet to be seen, including work with foundational dubstep producer and GWN “inspiration” Caspa, Boogie T, Dirt Monkey and more of the group’s SubCarbon Records family.
