In a radio interview with Zach Sang and the Gang, Zayn finally addresses the status of his relationship with model Gigi Hadid, and confronts the speculation that his debut solo album Mind of Mine will drop on the same date he left One Direction.
Here are the five things we learned from the radio interview:
He wrote “Pillowtalk” shortly after leaving One Direction.
“Basically, I wrote that shortly after I left the band,” Malik shared with Zach. “Got in the studio with a couple of writers that go by the name of Mike and Anthony Hannides. We wrote that song around the time that I was feeling those emotions and I feel like that’s why it came out the way it did. I feel like in the vocal you can get a sense that I’m meaning what I’m saying. ”
Does the release of Mind of Mine intentionally coincide with his departure from One Direction?
Zayn tried to play coy, asking, “I don’t know, is that how it works out? It’s March 25, it wasn’t planned that way. It works that way. It just seems to coincide with the iTunes launch and everything. Maybe it’s a sign.”
First thing he did after leaving One Direction?
“I think I played Xbox or something,” he said.
Zayn more-or-less confirms relationship with Gigi Hadid.
Co-host Jill asked Zayn, “Was it cool to have your girlfriend in the video?” He responded, “Yeah, that was cool. It was something different. We enjoyed it, it was fun. Had a lot of fun on set.”
The inspiration behind the “Pillowtalk” video.
“Mostly my idea. I wanted it to be representational of the art that I’m looking at at the minute, even just a perspective level, on the surface of it I wanted it be arty, and different and out-there. That was the whole feel for the video, We wanted a dream-feel to it.”
