EMI Music Publishing in Japan has shaken up its management team, importing a senior executive from Korea. Young Yu, the chief of EMI Music Publishing in Korea since 2004, has been named Managing Director of EMI Music Publishing Japan. He replaces Hong Kong-based EMI Music Publishing Asia Regional Managing Director Susanna Ng, who had been in charge of Japan.
San-e Ichii, President & CEO of EMI Music in Japan, will assume the additional post of Chairman of EMI Music Publishing Japan. Joining Ichii-San on the board will be Leo Corbett, the worldwide COO of EMI Group. Yu will continue in his role as chairman of the Korea Music Publishers’ Association (KMPA).
EMI Group CEO Roger Faxon issued a statement saying, “Japan is a hugely important music market, and it’s vital that EMI Music Publishing has strong and dynamic leadership in the territory. Young has been a very successful music executive for more than fifteen years, and his understanding of the market will be critical to our continuing progress in the years ahead.”
Yu, speaking about his new role said, “I’ve always had a fascination with Japan and its music, and learned the language many years ago. So after years of creating opportunities for Korean music in Japan, this new responsibility is a very special privilege for me. I look forward to working with Ichii-san and Leo to build an even stronger EMI Music Publishing presence in Japan.”
Young Yu began his career in the music industry in 1994 as A&R Director for Samsung Entertainment Group’s music division. While at Samsung, he produced albums for established local artists including Jin-Young Park, Won-Jun Kim, Weather Report and Tae-Ho Oh, and launched Samsung Music Publishing. He joined EMI in 1999, running EMI Music Korea’s local A&R and marketing operations, before leaving in 2002 to head concert promotion and marketing group All That Entertainment. He became Managing Director of EMI Music Publishing Korea in 2004, and was named Chairman of the KMPA in October 2009.
