Cello superstar Yo-Yo Ma performed three classics by Johann Sebastian Bach for NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert, uploaded on Friday (Aug. 17).
After Ma opened the performance with his first song “Prelude (from Suite No. 1 for Solo Cello)”, he began conversing with the audience. “Believe it or not,” he started, “This was the very first piece of music that I started on the cello when I was four years old.”
Ma went on to explain that during his childhood, he learned the song incrementally before perfecting it.
Before launching into his second song, “Sarabande (from Suite No.6 for Cello),” he called it the “heart” of the Bach suites, stating that he plays the song at both weddings and funerals of close friends. Closing out the suites, Ma played a tiny jig with “Gigue (from Suite No. 3 for Cello)”.
