As anticipated, Yahoo! Music is raising the price of its portable subscription service. Starting Nov. 1, the cost of the Yahoo! Music Unlimited to-go service will increase from $4.99 to $9.99 per month for annual subscribers (from $59.88 to $119.88 annually) and from $6.99 to $11.99 per month for monthly subscribers.
“We needed to increase the price of the to-go feature to appropriately accommodate the economics of the business,” a Yahoo! spokesperson told Billboard.biz.
Users can lock in the lower annual subscription rate for an additional year by signing up for the option by Oct. 31.
The increased subscription fees remain about $5 a month below existing portable subscriptions services from Rhapsody and Napster.
According to the Yahoo! spokesperson, the number of portable subscriptions it has received to date is less than the number of non-portable subscriptions.
