X Japan played at the Yokohama Arena on Friday (July 14) as part of their We Are X Acoustic Special Miracle: Kiseki no Yoru (Miracle Night): 6 Days Tour.
Yoshiki, the legendary visual kei band’s leader, was still recovering from the cervical artificial disc replacement surgery he received in May. He refrained from playing the drums during the tour and performed only on the piano in what turned out to be a rare opportunity for fans to enjoy superb acoustic versions of their favorite rock songs.
After the specially edited version of the documentary We Are X was shown before the set, Yoshiki began playing “Forever Love” with string musicians as members Toshi, Pata, Heath and Sugizo gradually joined in.
Yoshiki informed the audience, “Just because this is acoustic doesn’t mean we’ll put on a lukewarm show. Have fun today.”
True to his words, fans were treated to exquisite acoustic arrangements showcasing the band’s technical expertise and Toshi’s extraordinary vocal range.
During the last stretch of the concert, Yoshiki belted out the customary call-and-response, “We are!” repeatedly, to which fans enthusiastically responded, “X!” They also came to Toshi’s rescue when he was overcome with emotion and unable to continue singing; the audience rocked the arena by singing along in unison.
At the end of the show, Yoshiki thanked their warm, dedicated fans. “We really wondered whether or not we should go ahead with this concert,” he admitted. “We weren’t sure if we would be able to put on a impressive show. I’d like to extend my sincerest gratitude to everyone who came here tonight.”
The band went on to play three more nights over the long weekend at Yokohama Arena on July 15, 16 and 17.
