X Ambassadors‘ intense new song addresses gun violence in America and its effects on singer Sam Harris and his family.
On “OPTIMISTIC,” released Friday (Aug. 23), Harris passionately sings: “Gunshots and online forums/ American decorum…/ Telling myself I should be/ Optimistic/ So don’t tell me everything’s alright/ I’m trying so hard not to scream…/ Shot down in Dayton, Ohio/ Parkland, Vegas, El Paso.”
He also shares that it has factored into his family’s decision whether to have children: “Wanna kiss my wife, when she says/ She don’t wanna bring a baby into this world.”
The rock band said they will be making a donation to Everytown for Gun Safety. “We need to keep these conversations going. About gun violence prevention. About keeping families together. About protecting women’s reproductive rights. The 24-hour news cycle is unrelenting, but it’s important we stay vigilant and don’t forget these injustices,” Harris said.
“If you want to continue to do more, and you’d like to see real gun reform passed in the United States Senate, donate and contact your senators.”
Everytown encourages fans to text CHECKS to 644-33 to urge their senators to pass background checks on all gun sales in America.
X Ambassadors released their sophomore album, ORION, in June and will kick off a fall headline tour Oct. 8.
