Wyclef Jean will stage a pair of free performances Oct. 23 in New York, one of which is guaranteed to stop traffic. The veteran hip-hop artist will perform one song in the center of Times Square at Broadway and 42nd St. at noon. (Ed note: This story originally incorrectly reported the shows would be held on Oct. 16.)
The lunchtime jam and a full concert that evening at the Roseland Ballroom are part of a promotion for the LG VX6000 camera phone. Tickets to the club show are being given away to listeners of New York radio station WQHT (Hot 97) and online at As previously reported, the set features guest appearances by Patti LaBelle on “Celebration,” Carlos Santana on “Three Nights in Rio de Janeiro,” Redman on “Baby Daddy” and Missy Elliott on the single “Party to Damascus.”
“Damascus” is No. 23 on Billboard’s Hot Rap Tracks chart, No. 39 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles Sales tally, No. 51 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart and No. 90 on the Hot 100 this week.
Interestingly, LG isn’t the only phone maker with whom the artist is linked. At deadline, his official Web site was promoting a contest to win Virgin Mobile phones and autographed copies of the album.
