K-Pop group Wonder Girls arrives onto Billboard’s Social 50 chart, jumping into the tally at No. 33 — this week’s highest debut. The release of the video for their latest single “Be My Baby” on Nov. 5 prompted a burst of 8 million YouTube views, boasting their profile views by 164,000 last week.
Two days after the premiere, the South Korean act released their latest album “Wonder World.” In tandem, they’re hosting a contest for the video where fans are invited to submit recordings of their own “Baby” inspired dances.
These events helped grow the group’s audience, increasing their Facebook fans (up by 6,600) and YouTube channel subscribers (a gain of 6,900). Further, “Be My Baby” jumps five spots to No. 2 on our World Digital Songs chart, while the act’s “Wonder World” album debuts at No. 5 on the World Albums chart.
Billboard’s Social 50 chart ranks the most active artists on the world’s leading social networking sites — YouTube, Vevo, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and iLike — using a formula blending weekly additions of friends/fans/followers along with weekly artist page views and weekly song plays.
British vocal group One Direction — who came in third place on the U.K. version of The X Factor in 2010 — also make their debut on the tally at No. 34, thanks to the release of the video for their latest single “Gotta Be You.”
Since being released on Nov. 8, the video has earned 4.8 million Vevo plays, raising their plays from 1.8 million to 7.1 million week-to-week. Over in the U.K., “Gotta” is on course to debut in the top five on the Official U.K. Singles Chart this Sunday (Nov. 20). The quintet’s debut album, “Up All Night,” will be released in their homeland on Nov. 21.
Recently, the group joined the music-focused Facebook app SuperFan, which seeks to gamify what it means to be a fan. (Basically, fans are rewarded for their increased engagement with the act.) This helped grow the group’s audience, adding 110,000 fans week-to-week, which pushed them across the 1 million fan milestone on Facebook.
Meanwhile, 15-year old Austin Mahone makes his first appearance on the tally at No. 38, courtesy of his YouTube cover of Justin Bieber’s (No. 1) latest single “Mistletoe.” The video for the cover debuted on Oct. 26 and has since been viewed more than 2.5 million times.
While that number is certainly an accomplishment, Bieber’s own video — uploaded on Oct. 18 — has been viewed 46 million times. As Mahone makes apparent in the description for his video, he’s a big fan of Bieber and hopes to one day meet him.
In the tracking week, the singer added 39,000 fans to his Facebook page, which sits at 232,000 fans.
On Nov. 15, Drake, who hops 27-15 on the tally, spoke with Vevo News about the release of his new album, “Take Care,” on Nov. 15. The momentum leading up to the release shot his stats up across the board, with his fanbase (up by 260,000) and views (a gain of 92,000) both increasing in the tracking week.
The video for the single “Headlines” — which debuted on Oct. 20 — sits at 6.4 million Vevo plays. His plays only moved up 1.2 million week-to-week, raising his plays up to 8.5 million this week.
Back in the top ten, Katy Perry skips 7-5 with the release of the video for her latest single “The One That Got Away” on Nov. 11. It has since pulled in 11 million Vevo plays, raising her total plays from 13 million to 23 million week-to-week. In total, she added 418,000 fans week-to-week, most of which came from Facebook.
As for the rest of this week’s top 10: Adele (No. 2), Eminem (No. 8), and Selena Gomez (No. 9) hold down their respective positions. Meanwhile, Shakira (4-3), Lady Gaga (5-4), and Nicki Minaj (12-10) rise up the tally, while Rihanna (3-6) and LMFAO (6-7) tumble.
