Wolf Parade songwriter/keyboardist Spencer Krug’s solo project, Sunset Rubdown, will release its second full-length set, “Shut Up I Am Dreaming,” May 2 via Absolutely Kosher. The self-produced, 10-song effort is the follow-up to last year’s “Snake’s Got a Leg” and January’s self-titled EP, which were released on Canadian indie Global Symphonic.
Though Krug’s career with Wolf Parade and Frog Eyes has allowed him to grow as a songwriter in a band setting, Sunset Rubdown allows him to write songs that “can evolve in any direction” he wants them to.
“I’ve been writing solo for a long time, around seven or eight years,” Krug tells Billboard.com. “I haven’t always had time to practice the stuff, but with [Sunset Rubdown], I write songs in whatever manner I feel like. At times it’s weirder or noisier or quieter, while with Wolf Parade, no matter what you bring to the table, as a musician, the songs always come out sounding like a Wolf Parade song. I can’t explain it. Wolf Parade is just a little more hyper, I guess.”
Krug and bandmates Jordan Robson Cramer, Mike Doerksen and Camilla Wynn Ingr plan to tour behind the project following Wolf Parade’s April 30 appearance at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in Indio, Calif. Frog Eyes, which Krug has just recently re-joined, and the Besnard Lakes will support.
“Thankfully, I’m not the only one [in Wolf Parade] that has other things on their plate,” Krug says. “Everyone else has something going on, musically, and otherwise. Lately, we can almost get by without day jobs, too.”
Wolf Parade will return to the studio in July to begin recording a follow-up to last year’s Isaac Brock-produced “Apologies to the Queen Mary,” with hopes to release the as-of-yet untitled effort before the end of the year. According to Krug, the band has not yet decided if the Modest Mouse frontman will helm the new effort.
“We’re in the middle of building our own studio and I think since we’re pouring all this effort into it, we might want to try to produce it ourselves,” he says.
In addition, Krug recently teamed with Destroyer’s Dan Bejar and Frog Eyes’ Carey Mercer to record a batch of new original tunes. The project, dubbed Thunder Cloud, will be released this fall via Jagjaguwar, Krug says.
“I think it’s a one-time thing, something we all just wanted to try out with each other,” Krug says, “But you never know. We were all joking about doing something together one time and Carey decided to take the joke all the way.”
