Amy Winehouse’s two-CD, deluxe edition of her “Back to Black” album rose 3-1 yesterday to top the U.K. album chart for the first time. In a singles top 10 featuring almost no changes from last week, Duffy’s “Mercy” (A&M/Universal) started a third week as the U.K.’s No. 1 song yesterday.
Winehouse’s sales figures, in the U.K. and beyond, continue to flourish as tabloid coverage of her private life proliferates. The deluxe “Back to Black” is in it 17th week on the chart, but its new sales spurt does appear to be at the expense of the triple platinum-certified, single-disc original, which falls 12-30 in its 70th chart week.
Winehouse’s latest achievement kept Goldfrapp from a chart-topping debut with the “Seventh Tree” album (Mute), which came in at No. 2, mirroring the performance of 2005’s “Supernature.” Mika’s “Life in Cartoon Motion” (Casablanca/Universal Island) climbed again 5-3, and another special edition album, the tour edition of Michael Buble’s “Call Me Irresponsible” (Reprise), rose 14-4.
There were two appearances by veterans in the top 10, with Donny Osmond’s “From Donny With Love” (UCJ) debuting at No. 8 and Billy Fury’s “His Wondrous Story” (UMTV) returning to that upper echelon, 15-10. Last week’s new entry at No. 1, the Feeling’s “Join With Us” (Universal Island), crashed to No. 11.
Duffy’s single stayed ahead of “What’s It Gonna Be” (Ministry of Sound) by H “Two” O featuring Platnum and Nickelback’s “Rockstar” (Roadrunner) as the top six of the chart held their positions. The only movement had Rihanna’s “Don’t Stop The Music” (Def Jam) and OneRepublic’s “Stop and Stare” (Interscope) nudging up a place each to No.7 and No.8 respectively.
There was more activity outside the top 10, with 23-year-old Island signing Taio Cruz up 23-11 with “Come on Girl,” on the 4th & Broadway imprint. Cruz was born in Britain to a Nigerian father and Brazilian mother and is rising fast on download sales alone of a track that’s physically released today. The Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 “Low” (Atlantic) by FloRida featuring T-Pain climbed 22-12 and Chris Brown’s “With You” (RCA) motored 35-19.
Winehouse’s regular edition of “Back to Black” (Universal Island) returned to the top of Billboard’s European Top 100 Albums chart, while the 14-week run by Timbaland presents OneRepublic’s “Apologize” (Mosley/Blackground/ Interscope) on Eurochart Hot 100 Singles was finally ended by Leona Lewis’ “Bleeding Love” (Syco Music/Sony BMG).
