When Jimmy Fallon’s reign as the host of NBC’s “The Tonight Show” begins next month, he’ll have a fairly worthy duo of guests to help ring in his premiere: Will Smith and U2.
In a release today (Jan. 19), NBC confirmed that the actor/rapper will be featured as a guest on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” during its first episode, while the Irish rock act will follow as the premiere’s second guest.

Both Smith and U2 have their share of promotable material. The former will appear in the upcoming Warner Bros. film “Focus,” directed by the team of Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (“I Love You Phillip Morris,” “Crazy, Stupid, Love”).

Meanwhile, the latter is nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song for its song “Ordinary Love,” penned for the film “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom,” having just scored a win in the same category at the Golden Globes. Bono and co. are also slated to release a new album — its first since 2009’s “No Line on the Horizon” sometime this year.
Fallon joins as host of the long-running late-night show after the upcoming departure of Jay Leno. Once Fallon takes the helm, the show will move to New York.
