In an age of seemingly endless possibilities for music merchandising, some items still manage to evoke a sense of wonderment, awe and/or even a bit of head scratching. Recent items inspiring such reactions include Wavves’ marijuana grinder, the Randy Rhoads cabernet sauvignon and just yesterday Disney’s controversial Joy Division-inspired Mickey Mouse T-shirt.
With that in mind comes word that Will Oldham, he of Bonnie Prince Billy, Palace, Palace Music and several other pseudonyms, has created and is selling a line of organic coffee. The Kona Rose Coffee Bonny Billy Blend is now available on his label Drag City’s website for the princely-sum of $20 a half pound.

The announcement describes the Bonny Billy Blend, made from 100% certified organic Kona coffee beans, as possessing “a clean body and fresh finish.” The Drag City site adds that the blend has “overtones of chocolate, leather and non-wacky tobaccy.”
In a bit of cross-promotional branding, the label on the re-sealable black coffee bag features a coat of arms also featured in the artwork of Bonnie “Prince” Billy’s latest album “Wolfroy Goes To Town,” (Drag City) released on Oct. 4, 2011 — and which is recommended as an accompaniment to Oldham’s brew.

Though the press release is somewhat tongue in cheek, suggesting the blend be paired with “chewing gum, hash browns, (or as we like to say, hash, browns), garden heirlooms, sour patch gummies, cough drops, foodstuff, ulcers, dandelions, hot dogs and turkey necks,” Oldham is a serious coffee connoisseur. According to a close source, Oldham has been known to drink four cups of espresso in a single sitting and can talk for hours on end about the caffeinated beverage. All of which perhaps helps explain Oldham’s prolific music output over the last 17 years.
