Cancer research and treatment center City of Hope announced Wednesday (Aug. 29) that Stephen Schwartz, composer of stage productions such as Wicked, Godspell and Pippin will be presented with the Warner/Chappell Music Icon of Hope award. Schwartz will receive the award at the 14th annual Songs of Hope XIV presented by Spotify on Thursday, Sept. 13.
The “Icon of Hope” Award is just the latest honor for Schwartz during his illustrious four-decade plus career. He has taken home four Grammy Awards — including best musical show album for Wicked in 2005 — in addition to three Academy Awards. In 2009, Schwartz joined the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame before being inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame the following January.

City of Hope previously announced other award recipients for the night, which include the likes of Benny Blanco and Mike Will Made-It receiving the Clive Davis Legend in Songwriting award, Sarah Aarons receiving the Martin Bandier “Vanguard” Award and James Newton Howard receiving the Electronic Arts Composer of the Year award. Additionally, the Songs of Hope Beverly and Ben Horowitz Legacy Award, presented to Stephen J. Forman, will include $100,000 to support the research of Forman and his team.
Songs of Hope XIV presented by Spotify will be held at Alex da Kid‘s KIDinaKORNER Kampus in Sherman Oaks, California, for the second consecutive year. Last year’s Songs of Hope event raised more than $400,000 for City of Hope.
