Before the decade is done, there’s an entire onslaught of artists who’ve spent 2019 dominating the charts, dropping new music and developing more as an individual artist.
Let’s start with the youngest: Billie Eilish at age 17 scored her first Billboard Hot 100 leader with “Bad Guy,” making her the first artist born in this century to do so. This dethroned Lil Nas X, whose smash hit “Old Town Road,” featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, reigned at No. 1 on the Hot 100 for a historical 19-week streak. Songbirds and lovebirds Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes also pulled off a No. 1 single this year with the steamy “Señorita.”
But unpredictable artists like Lewis Capaldi and Lil Tecca have climbed all the way up to the top 5 of the Hot 100: Capaldi’s “Someone You Loved” peaked at No. 3 this week (dated Oct. 5), while Tecca’s “Ran$om” follows directly behind with its recent No. 4 peak.
Drake secured his ninth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart (dated Aug. 17) with Care Package, an archival compilation of his best deep-in-the-feels tracks that were previously unreleased by any DSP. Jonas Brothers also made a chart-topping comeback this year when their single “Sucker,” from their third No. 1-charting LP Happiness Begins, skyrocketed to the top slot of the Hot 100, making it the band’s first leader ever since their first entry back in 2007.
Post Malone and Taylor Swift also scored Billboard 200-leading albums this year — Hollywood’s Bleeding and Lover, respectively — while simultaneously managing to secure Hot 100 spots for every song on their albums. That’s 17 songs for Post and 18 songs for Swift.
