What So Not‘s beat-heavy “We Can Be Friends” with up-and-coming actress-singer Herizen, out today (Jan. 22) is quite the mood setter.
It’s got a melody like a warm glow in the dark. The pounding rhythm plays over future bass chords and synth textures that hit in soft reverse, just as one might try to soften the blow of the news that love doesn’t live here anymore.
Herizen, who some may recognize as Mylene Cruz on Netflix’s The Get Down, delivers a honey-drip performance she says is about “letting go of someone you love for the better and feeling all the pain in that detachment, with the hope that it could end in a friendship.”
“We Can Be Friends” is the first original single to follow the Australian producer’s 2018 album Not All The Beautiful Things. It’s out now on Counter Records.
