Chinese-Australian video personality and singer Wengie has teamed up with Minnie of K-pop girl group (G)I-dle to fiercely declare their dominance as harbingers of a new “Empire.” The first collab from the pair, the dramatic song is a Korean-English hybrid propelled by a pulsating, clapping beat and trap percussion as Wengie and Minnie sing and rap domineeringly about how they’re modern day empresses building their own “Empire.”
“I’m so excited for ‘Empire’ and so honored to be working with Minnie from (G)I-DLE!,” Wengie tells Billboard. “She is so talented! I hope this song inspires listeners to build their own empires and chase your dreams!”
Wengie recently began transitioning from YouTuber to singer and has released several K-pop-inspired tracks. Minnie is a Thai member of girl group (G)I-dle, which has regularly put out impactful music since their debut in 2018 with the single “Latata.” Last year, her group mates Soyeon and Miyeon collaborated on virtual girl group K/DA’s hit song “Pop/Stars” for League of Legends. (G)I-dle most recently released their single “Uh-Oh” in June, which peaked at No. 7 on the World Digital Song Sales chart dated July 6.
A powerful anthem from the duo, the video for “Empire” opens with an enthroned Wengie donning regal jewels and a crown, before transitioning to a dynamic dance break. Minnie’s arrival, also on a throne, comes next and the two spend the rest of the video serving up the fierce song and choreography like the queens they are.
“This is my very first time having a collaboration with another artist so I was really excited,” Minnie tells Billboard. “Working with Wengie is a big honor for me! Check out the ‘Empire’ music video before anyone on Billboard premiere! Hope you guys like it!”
