Wayne and Garth are back in the basement, jamming out in a new Uber Eats Super Bowl commercial that reboots Mike Myers and Dana Carvey’s beloved Wayne’s World characters.
The first installment of the ad, which premiered on Saturday (Jan. 30), has the duo back in their signature World get-ups — Myers in his black t-shirt, ripped jeans and WW baseball hat, Carvey rocking an Alice Cooper t-shirt under a flannel with shredded jeans and Garth’s iconic blonde shaggy hair — acting like nothing’s changed at all since their late ’80s heyday.
“And we’re back,” Wayne says at the top of the original ad in one of his stock catchphrases. “2020 man, that was a great year…NOT!” he adds as Garth chimes in, sitting alongside his pal on a ratty couch in the basement of Wayne’s mom’s house in Aurora, Illinois. “We just wanted to say that we’ll see you soon for the game, which for legal reasons cannot be named,” Wayne jokes, alluding to the tight trademark the NFL has on the name of Sunday’s (Feb. 7) 2021 championship face-off between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Kansas City Chiefs.
“We’ll see you on the Big Bowl,” says Garth with a snicker. “The gigantic bowl,” adds Wayne.
In a second, one-minute version of the spot that dropped on Wednesday (Feb. 3), they are joined by a special celebrity guest, Cardi B, who gets totally into their whole vibe with a crazy outfit change challenge and her own custom Garth get-up.
In the Cardi-fied second ad, the duo note that as a local access cable show they are adamant about supporting their hometown restaurants, but would like, never, resort to subliminal messages or manipulation to do so. (As if). “We’d never shamelessly rely on a celebrity cameo,” says Wayne, as Garth adds, “Right, Cardi B?”
Just like that, Cardi is on the couch in a fuzzy green outfit, doing her nails and urging viewers to “Yeah! Eat local!” as the trio jump in the air and do a TikTok-inspired quick outfit change that finds the boys in Cardi’s green housecoat and the “WAP” rapper in ripped jeans, a black t-shirt and baseball hat before all three get Garth’d. They wrap it up by jamming on one of Wayne’s newest rockers, “Local eats, Wayne’s World, Yummy time, excellent!”
After debuting the characters in a series of wildly popular Saturday Night Live sketches, Myers and Carvey teamed up for the 1992 Wayne’s World film — which spawned an iconic scene in which they rock out to Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” — as well as 1993’s Wayne’s World 2 sequel.
Super Bowl LV is going down this Sunday (Feb. 7). Check out the Uber Eats ads below.
