Dance music fans may know Los Angeles artist Wax Motif for his hard-hitting G house productions, but there’s clearly more to the Australian native than has yet met the ear.
On his rework of Emma Dewing’s “Beautiful Mess,” Wax Motif trades in his typical funk bass and four-to-the-floor for shimmering synths and melodic plucks carefully perched over broken beats.
The lush production marks such a stylistic departure from his usual fare that he felt compelled to call it a “version” rather than a standard remix. Listen to the full premiere exclusively on Billboard Dance below and download it for free here.
Wax Motif was originally introduced to Dewing by his friend and collaborator Ely Rise, who brought the stems from “Beautiful Mess” to his studio.
“Everything about Emma is unique; her voice, her style, her etiquette – it all feels so genuine,” he says. “I think he was expecting me to do some banging house remix but I just let it flow and this ‘version’ is what happened, I guess you could call it my re-imagination of her single and a deeper side of my production.”
