“Today, our long national nightmare is over,” Jon Stewart said on last night’s Daily Show (video below), referring to yesterday’s announcement that starting in February Verizon will begin providing service for the Apple iPhone.
The satirical report made light of iPhone users’ biggest complaint while AT&T was the smartphone’s exclusive service provider: poor reception.
“For the past three or four years those of us in the iPhone community have sacrificed one thing for the ability to carry around every photograph we’ve ever taken, every song we’ve ever listened to, every home video or compass,” Stewart lamented. “We have sacrificed the ability to make phone calls.”
While the bit’s humor was spot on, much of the criticism AT&T has taken over the years may not be. There are those who argue that poor reception or dropped calls ae actually the hardware’s fault. And while the telecommunications company had an exclusive provider contract with Apple, they were hamstrung from criticizing the popular device. When Verizon begins their contract with the iPhone in February, perhaps we’ll finally learn once and for all if the device’s problems lie with Apple’s product or the service provider(s).
