James Hetfield was in the house at the SAP Center in San Jose on Monday night to support his favorite hockey team, the San Jose Sharks. Wearing a blue Sharks jersey, the Metallica singer/guitarist was joined by bandmate Kirk Hammett for a twin electric guitar rendition of the National Anthem before game 4 of the Stanley Cup finals showdown between the Sharks and the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Both of the guitars used in the performance were signed by the Metallica members and then put on display on the venue’s concourse during the game and donated to the Sharks Foundation to be auctioned off. Fans can bid on the guitars at SharksFoundation.org until Wednesday (June 15), with proceeds going to two beneficiaries yet to be determined. At press time, the highest bid for Hetfield’s ESP guitar was $10,025, while Hammett’s was up to $5,025.
