J-pop band Superfly released a new single, “Bloom,” digitally along with the accompanying music video. The physical version will go on sale June 6.
Fans had looked forward to the song’s release since it was performed for the first time during the band’s 10th anniversary concert last year. Written by longtime collaborators Junji Ishiwatari and Koichi Tsutaya, who co-wrote one of Superfly’s biggest hits, “Ai Wo Komete Hanataba Wo,” it’s an epic ballad that features beautiful strings and piano along with frontwoman Shiho Ochi’s clear, powerful vocals.
Shuichi Banba, director of the visuals for “Ai Wo Komete Hanataba Wo” and “Beautiful,” helmed the video for “Bloom.” The mostly white, museum-like backdrop enhances Ochi’s floor-length multicolored floral dress, and motifs taken from the lyrics like “seeds” and “rain” are used to visualize the sweet song about cultivating a loving relationship together with a partner.
