The Warner Music Group has created the Independent Label Group to oversee the company’s indie label endeavors. Todd Moscowitz has been named ILG’s president.
Moscowitz, who joined WMG in 2004 as president of the then newly launched Asylum Records, continues to report to WEA president and CEO John Esposito.
In the last 12 months, four of Asylum’s releases have debuted in the Top 10 of The Billboard 200: Mike Jones’ “Who is Mike Jones?” (Warner Bros./Asylum/SwishaHouse) at No. 3; Webbie’s “Savage Life” (Trill/Asylum) at No. 8; Paul Wall’s “The People’s Champ” (SwishaHouse/Asylum Records) at No. 1; and Bun B’s Trill (Rapalot/Asylum), No. 6.
In addition to Asylum, the label group consists of East West Records and Cordless Recordings. The presidents of those labels,respectively Fred Feldman and Jason Fiber, will report to Moscowitz.
“As we intensify our commitment to the independent music community, we wanted to develop a structure whereby the resources available to independent labels and artists could be housed under one umbrella,” Esposito said in a statement. WMG chairman and CEO of U.S. Recorded Music Lyor Cohen added, “The Independent Label Group is designed to provide entrepreneurs the resources to organically grow their business.”
