Cyrus vaults 5-2 on the chart with a 67 percent gain in overall chart points, fueled by fan engagement on Instagram and Facebook. Cyrus won the Video of the Year trophy during the Aug. 24 show, but instead of accepting the award herself, she sent a 22-year-old homeless man, Jesse Helt, to the stage. In his speech, Helt directed fans to Cyrus’ Facebook page to find out more information about the charity My Friends House, which supports Los Angeles’ homeless youth.
The speech resulted in a 159 percent increase in fans on Cyrus’ Facebook page, adding 176,000 fans in the week ending Aug. 31, according to Next Big Sound. Cyrus also posted several photos with Holt to her Instagram, resulting in an 83 percent increase in reactions and adding 428,000 new fans on the platform. The New York Times reported that Cyrus raised more than $200,000 for the organization in less than 24 hours through her Facebook page.
A year ago after the awards, Cyrus — who performed a twerk-filled medley with Robin Thicke — leaped 8-2 with a 131 percent gain in chart points.
The Social 50 incorporates the following metrics: weekly additions of fans across Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram; reactions and conversations across Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and Facebook; and views to an artist’s Wikipedia page, according to music analytics provider Next Big Sound.
Also experiencing a Video Music Awards bump is 5 Seconds of Summer, as the band’s “Amnesia” (which was performed on the show) rises 3-1 on the weekly Twitter Top Tracks chart. The group also rises 9-8 on the Social 50, and their song “Good Girls” makes its debut at No. 8 on Top Tracks.
Over on the Twitter Emerging Artists chart, Canadian rapper P. Reign’s “DnF” debuts at No. 1 — with a little help from featured artists Drake and Future. The track also debuts at No. 26 on Billboard Twitter Top Tracks and No. 23 on Rap Digital Songs, selling 13,000 downloads in the week ending Aug. 31, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
