The Virgin Group has signed an agreement with MusicNet to help operate a digital download store and subscription music club for its Virgin Digital unit.
The global service will allow consumers to either purchase music a-la-carte or through a subscription to gain access to more than 700,000 music tracks. Each option will be available via the Internet, in the company’s stores, and on mobile phones and consumer electronic devices, the company says.
“Passionate music fans have made it clear that they want their music when they want it, where they want it, and how they want it,” Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Group of companies, says in a statement. “Well, we’ve heard them.”
The Virgin Digital initiative will be headed by Zack Zalon, who most recently was GM of Radio Free Virgin.
“We will offer a 360-degree world of music through Virgin Digital with more selection, better sound quality, exclusive customer service features and the passion and attitude that defines the Virgin experience,” adds Simon Wright, CEO of the Virgin Entertainment Group.
