VH1 has revamped its annual fan-driven My VH1 Music Awards show, giving it a new name and broadening the scope of the categories to include other forms of entertainment. Rechristened the VH1 Big in 2002 Awards, the event will take place in December at a Los Angeles venue to be announced. Voting for winners will continue to take place online at vh1.com.
This kudos-fest has been known for its ever-changing, unusually named categories, and this year is no exception. This time around, the “Can’t Get You Out of My Head” (best song) award category has given nods to Vanessa Carlton’s “A Thousand Miles,” Sheryl Crow’s “Soak up the Sun,” Jimmy Eat World’s “The Middle,” Avril Lavigne’s “Complicated,” John Mayer’s “No Such Thing,” and Nelly’s “Hot in Herre.”
Not surprisingly, those nominated for the “Garage Sale” award (best garage band) are the Hives, the Strokes, the Vines, and the White Stripes. There will also film and TV awards for best props used in a movie and favorite “very special episode.”
Heavy metal icon Ozzy Osbourne and his family have an entire category to themselves in the strangely titled “You Kiss Your Mother with That Mouth?” award which will be given to whomever VH1 viewers say has “the best arsenal of expletives.” Up for the award are all of the stars of MTV’s “The Osbournes” series: Osbourne, his wife/manager Sharon, their children Jack and Kelly, and bizarrely enough, their bulldog Lola. More of the awards show’s nominations will be announced in the near future.
In related news, MTV has announced that “The Osbournes” will return for its second season beginning Nov. 26 at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT. Since debuting in March, “The Osbournes” has become MTV’s highest-rated show and won an Emmy for outstanding non-fiction programming (reality). According to Nielsen Media Research, the program’s first season averaged 6 million U.S. viewers per episode.
“We are excited to invite the world into our home for another dose of Osbourne insanity,” Sharon Osbourne said in a statement. “This season the show takes on a whole new meaning as we share the highs and the lows of the last six months with our viewers. With the Osbournes you never know what you’re gonna get.”
