Vanessa Hudgens is back in the musical game.
The actress is set to lead a staged reading of the musical adaptation of the 2004 film The Notebook, based on the popular novel by Nicholas Sparks. It will be the first reading of the season at Vassar and New York Stage & Film’s annual summer play development incubator, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Jelani Alladin, Nicholas Belton, Candy Buckley, Antonio Cipriano, Hailey Kilgore and James Naughton are also in the cast.
The story will be written by This Is Us writer Bekah Brunstetter, and Ingrid Michaelson will be composing the score for The Notebook musical. The singer-songwriter announced the news on the Today Show with Hoda Kotb. “It’s so different when you’re writing for a character than when you’re writing about yourself and your own emotions,” she said. “It’s been really interesting and really different for me to write from these perspectives. Just the idea of this undying love and of loss and memory. I can’t stop writing them.”
The one-time-only reading will take place June 23 at 3 p.m. EST.
