Vampire Diaries star Michael Malarkey is set to release a 5-song EP, Feed the Flames, on Oct. 12; the title track will debut on iTunes Sept. 16.
“As far as my songwriting goes, I became infatuated with Tom Waits after graduating high school, specifically Rain Dogs (probably the most influential album of all time for me) and The Heart of Saturday Night,” Malarkey tells Billbaord. “[That] lead to further obsessions with Nick Cave and Leonard Cohen whose narrative qualities continue to influence my songwriting to this day.…oh, and Dylan of course. One of the only covers I ever learned on my own accord was ‘Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright.'”
” ‘Feed The Flames’ is about reinventing love as you go along, fighting and making up, flirting with disaster and madness and coming out stronger after the struggle,” Malarkey tells Billboard. “It’s very lyrically driven and honest and there’s a fair bit of finger-picking. My greatest challenge in making this record was trying to keep that real “backporch” quality but also adding something more to my usual lo-fi approach. It’s heart-breaking yet hopeful and I’m very happy with the way it’s turned out.”
