The U.S. Embassy in Berlin warned Americans yesterday (March 11) to stay clear of a popular Turkish singer’s upcoming concert, saying a hand grenade exploded at a previous show in Hamburg and that local police believe a new attack may be planned.
“Based on that suggestion, they might want to avoid the concert,” said an embassy spokesman on customary condition of anonymity.
Last month, two people were wounded when a hand grenade exploded at a Hamburg concert by Ibrahim Tatlises — also known as Ibo. Local authorities have also warned “that an extremist group in Berlin may be planning an act of violence” at a concert by the singer Friday in downtown Berlin, the spokesman said.
It was not clear whether the attack or the warning specifically concerned Americans, and the spokesman refused to elaborate.
